Black Wood Exhibition by ASN1

Whilst the main ASN studio is cleared for the final year’s Masters Degree Show, ASN1 mounted their final Semester 2 project. Following the field trip to the Black Wood of Rannoch, the students held a group exhibition at Edinburgh’s Patriothall Gallery. The exhibition featured individual responses to this environment – a Highland remnant of the ancient Caledonian forest which once covered most of the landscape below 1,500 feet.

The complexity and interconnectivity of the ecosystem was explored by Natalia Bezerra in, Networks, a linear wall drawing and by Cody Lukas Anderson in Pine.

The Extended Body, a complex installation in which two pine trees were visually connected across space by a series of mirrors.

The order underlying complexity was developed through a series of screen prints, suspended in front of a geometric, monochromatic wall painting, in Equilibrium, by Audrey Yeo, which took the bark of the Scot’s Pine (Pinus sylvestris) as its subject.

Similarly, Luis Guzman used a transparent cube to represent modernity as a separate context to the natural, which is presented as a fragment within the cube in Capture. The work draws attention to the complex architectural structures in the living lichen and mosses on a decaying tree branch.

Becky Sutton used the field trip to continue her studies in perception, through photography and film. Here she made a film of the detail in the waterline. A still image from the film was presented in the exhibition as part of a mirrored installation at floor level, entitled The Waterline.

Relating the landscape to both time and traditional Chinese ink painting, Jiao Di presents a two-piece work in Shanshui. In the first a series of wooden rods were stained in peat and arranged to infer a landscape painted in subtle ink washes. The second highlighted a series of ‘mountains’ in a four-section linear photograph of wave forms on the surface of Loch Rannoch.

A recent exhibition by continuing Art Space and Nature MFA students investigated the sea’s vibrant materiality and chaotic order, following fieldwork in the Outer Hebrides.  A further exhibition building on this work will follow at ‘An Lanntair’ gallery, Stornoway in March next year.

‘ORIGINS’ Russell Beard

Filmed on Tulsa Beach on the Isle of Lewis in the Scottish Outer Hebrides, Russell Beard’s video installation ‘ORIGINS’ consists of a mirrored moving image of the complex patterns created in water, sand and sunlight where a river meets the sea.*

*Alternatively it could be read as a time piece, concerning the origins of our own vital materiality…. and how certain properties emerge from complex chaotic systems amid the ongoing oscillations between the creative generative forces of life’s perpetual becoming and the dissipative cosmic processes of entropy and decay.


Alex Hackett’s work goes within the sea to experience the shoreline.  Adopting sculptural forms and materials from the Isle of Lewis alongside sympathetic found materials, she creates objects reflecting the mystical nature of the shore. Texts document the material qualities of the water as affected by weather, the elements and light, whilst bearing the mark of the personal.

Will Urmston’s piece came to light during a stay in a cliff-side bothy on the west coast of Lewis. Looking through to the sea below, we enter ‘the cave’ and look outward with clarity as we face the peace of our own elemental existence.

This exhibition brought together work by current MA/MFA students on the Art Space and Nature programme at Edinburgh College of Art following recent fieldwork in the Black Wood of Rannoch, one of the few remaining areas of ancient Caledonian forest in Scotland.

Fieldwork in Outlandia

MA / MFA Art Space and Nature recently returned from five days spent undertaking fieldwork at Outlandia in Glen Nevis.  Each with individual fields of research, fieldwork took students to hidden mystical caves, out onto the shores in nearby Knoydart, and precarious trails to the Steall falls in the Glen.

An exhibition of works in progress, themed around fieldwork undertaken at Outlandia, will open on 9 December at Tent Gallery.

Fieldwork trip to the Black Wood

The students of Art, Space and Nature went to the Black Wood of Rannoch this past weekend, with artists Tim Collins and Reiko Goto. The Black Wood of Rannoch is one of the few remnants of the ancient Caledonian Forest, and is a bit of forest that is exceptionally biodiverse.

The fieldwork conducted this past weekend will contribute to an exhibition at Patriot Hall in May 2014. More information about the exhibition to follow.

“Element” Exhibition at Pier Arts Centre: Photo Recap

The Art, Space and Nature group exhibition “Element” opened this past Thursday, 13 February, at the Pier Arts Centre in Orkney. Featuring 13 artists, the exhibition includes the following works-


Javier Vidal Aguilera

An ephemeral installation, sited in the landscape of the Mainland of Orkney. Part of a series where I explore the cube as the way humans inhabit and relate to the natural landscape as a commentary on urban spread.


Sonia Ali

The archival preserve of the landscape is also a reserve for exploration and resource extraction. Thus, a spatial void is created which is once again compressed to become new repositories of time.


Nadia Dermatopoulou

A film made on Hoy which both captures and is a collaboration between the film and weather.


Jonathan Hemelberg

This work is an expandable, adaptable, puzzle drawing. Using quotations, derived from the writings of John Muir, to compose a poem that can be read in different arrangements.


Patrick Lydon

These hand-mixed colour swatches represent the mathematically calculated dominant colour of landscape photographs taken in locations: Flotta Oil Terminal; Grainshore Wind Turbine; Skara Brae Prehistoric Village.

This two-part work (soundscape and textual map) is an incessant rant of what I heard, what I listened to, what I saw, what I watched, what I felt and what I experienced – in the islands of Orkney.

This process raises questions about what things are. Having broken a shell into pieces, is it still a shell? If not, then at what point did the change occur and what has it become?

A journey undertaken, from Loch of Stenness to Loch of Harray via the Bridge of Brodgar.


Zhao Xie

A proposed landscape structure designed to provide nesting and roosting sites for Orkney birds, principally starlings.

Orkney Fieldwork Review

This year’s ASN students met this past week to present their initial thoughts and reflections on Orkney. The students visited the islands in early October, and have been researching topics of landscape perceptions, light quality, sound, industrial landscapes, collection of local materials, bird habitation, art and athleticism, and effects of inhabitation, amongst others.

The students will return to Orkney in February 2014 to show an exhibition at the Pier Arts Centre in Stromness.

AUA Partnership: ASN Student Work at Setouchi Triennale

In partnership with Aichi University of the Arts (AUA), ASN student Patrick Lydon worked in residence on the island of Megijima this past summer to create a community-interactive work for the Setouchi International Triennale. 

HUMAN:NATURE Megijima, Japan - Setouchi International Triennale

The work, titled [HUMAN:NATURE] fused technology, art, and social ecology to help envision a future for the environment and for local communities, and included arranging a regional panel discussion on farming methods in addition to the team’s research and development work.

With an aim to create impact for the artists and locals alike, the project team forged new relationships and initiated meaningful dialogue about contemporary issues in Japan’s small agriculture and fishing based communities.

The physical result of the project was an interactive documentary which allowed for visitors and locals alike to explore the connections between people, folklore, history, and the island itself.

Working at the crossroads of environmental study and socially-aware art practice, the project was lead by first year ASN student Patrick Lydon, and included a team of Suhee Kang (Korea, photography), Johann Barbie (Germany, software development), and Songyi Lee (Korea, community interaction).

Professor Isao Suizu from AUA was the project coordinator and guided the teams work within the island and on a regional network of farms. He also brought with him, an amazing cast of his own Landscape Architecture graduate students who visited the island often to help realize the project.

The Setouchi International Triennale also provided over a dozen volunteers who gave countless hours to film, interview, translate, and create the final output.

Student Work in Yamaguchi, Japan

Current ASN student Patrick Lydon showed works at two venues in Japan this past Summer and Fall.

The N3 Art Lab in Yamaguchi, Japan unveiled a new showcase of ecological-themed artworks with a new show titled Eco-Art Village Project. The opening is part of a city-wide celebratory show for Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media (YCAM) 10th Anniversary.

For Eco-Art Village Project, Patrick created an interactive installation work titled Free Food Kit. The show runs from July 6 – September 29.

At the Yamaguchi Institute of Contemporary Art, Patrick was invited to show a series of photoscapes and networked soundscapes titled Green.

The works were part of the Eutopia Ideal Garden show which took place at the Institute’s Kimachi House in July 2013.
