Photo recap- Edible Cities Edinburgh and URBANE

The second-year Art, Space and Nature solo shows began this past week with MFA candidate Allison Palenske coordinating the Edible Cities Edinburgh workshop series and curating URBANE: Exploring Our Urban Relationship to Food.

These events saw the space of Tent Gallery converted into a forum for discussing the food culture and food system of Edinburgh in past, present and future contexts. Edible Cities Edinburgh took place over two days, inviting community members into the Art, Space and Nature studio to listen to key speakers in Edinburgh’s local food scene, complemented by workshop that explored mapping techniques that can be utilised and further developed by these community groups.

Speakers included Marianne Paget of the City of Edinburgh Council, Kirsty Sutherland from the Friends of the Granton Castle Walled Garden, Jane Brennan from Edinburgh Garden Partners, Tim Foster with Open Street Map, Tom Kirby from Granton Community Gardeners, and Marion Preez from UrbanPioneers. The workshops certainly brought a wider audience into the gallery space, and many of the ideas discussed help to further identify the need for artist involvement in these projects.

The workshop series was complemented by the URBANE exhibition, which opened on 19th February. With 12 different artist works, the exhibition shows a broad range of artist involvement within food issues. Clem Sandison and Alex Wilde of Open Jar Collective, a group of socially-engaged artists, spoke at the opening reception about their Dairy House research- a project that began with the collective’s involvement in the Environmental Art Festival Scotland, specifically investigating the culture of dairy within the context of Dumfries and Galloway. Hot chai was served by Alex and Clem and milk memories were collected from gallery-goers.

URBANE is open to the public Monday 23rd February and Tuesday 24th February, so there’s still a chance to see the exhibition! More information about opening hours is available here.
