PICASSO, WARHOL, HIRST AND CALLEJA UNDER ONE ROOF
Joseph Calleja ASN Student is to have his work displayed at a major London exhibition alongside artists including Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol and Damien Hirst. Joseph Calleja, is currently funded by the Malta Arts Scholarship to study Art Space and Nature at MFA level, has made it in the New Sensations 2010 shortlist.
The competition is open to all graduating students from the United Kingdom’s Art colleges and is run by the Saatchi Gallery and Channel 4. Joseph is delighted to be one of only 20 students to have made the shortlist. He says:
“It is an honour to have my work exhibited alongside work by such iconic artists and I am nervous but excited at the prospect.”
The outcome of this process will culminate next week where all the shortlisted will join an array of high profile artists in an exhibition curated by Wolfe von Lenkiewicz and Victoria Golembiovskaya in London.
The extensive list includes prominent names such as Gupda Subodh, Gerhard Richter, Damian Hirst, Banksy, Andy Warhol, Joseph Beuys, Georges Seurat, Egon Schiele, Yves Klein, Edouard Manet and Pablo Picasso.
Calleja, who is originally from Qala, Gozo, says that the exhibition is a “once in a life time opportunity” with his work ‘Tixref’ displayed amongst the biggest names of the contemporary art world.
Though daunting as it may seem, Calleja is proud to flag his Maltese provenance and culture while being grateful to the Maltese and the Scottish people alike for having made his art education over recent years possible.
The exhibition will run from 14th October until 20th October, alongside the Frieze week.
